Helge is a distinguished speaker and guest lecturer at events and conferences throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. He has advised businesses, organizations, local and state governments, as well as U.S. Senators and members of the U.S. House of Representatives on agricultural challenges and opportunities.
Professional Engagements:
In 2009, Helge created An Organic Conversation, a weekly radio talk show featuring groundbreaking initiatives and ecology-based thinking in the organic food and holistic health movement. The show is featured weekly in San Francisco, Seattle, and Boston, as well as on over a dozen affiliated stations and a growing number of community radio stations throughout the country.
From 2004 to 2011, Helge served as the first Executive Director of Marin Organic, an innovative, award-winning association of organic producers in Marin County, California. Marin Organic is dedicated to creating the first all-organic county in the nation, addressing today’s economic, environmental, social, and cultural challenges in new and creative ways. Under Helge’s leadership, the organization has become one of the most progressive voices of sustainable agriculture in the U.S., and Marin County, “the national epicenter of the organic food movement” (New York Times, 2005).
Marin Organic’s members include such well-known names as Cowgirl Creamery, makers of award-winning organic cheeses, Star Route Farms, the oldest continuously certified organic farm in California, and Straus Family Creamery, the first organic dairy west of the Mississippi.
Prior to his role with Marin Organic, Helge was the Marketing and Communications Director for California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF), one of the largest organic food certifiers in the United States. His key objective was to educate the food industry and the public on the value of organic food and the importance of establishing an agricultural system based on ecologically sound methods.
During his time at CCOF, Helge produced, wrote, and hosted an educational video entitled, “Organic Food & Agriculture – Past, Present, Future.” The video encouraged CBS to choose him as the spokesperson for the “Inside Organic” campaign on KPIX, which aired in fall and winter of 2003.
Helge has a postgraduate degree in Marketing and Communications, and a Bachelor’s degree in music from his native Germany. He also received a certificate as Certified Nutrition Consultant, CNC, after studying holistic nutrition at Bauman College in Santa Cruz, CA.
Helge currently serves on the Board of the Ecological Farming Association (EFA), as well as an advisor to a number of organic food projects and national and international rural development initiatives.
